I am directed to acknowledge the receipt of

your letter of the 11th. June on the subject of the appointment of Mr. Cheetham as Agent of Messrs. Sanders, Rehders and Company in

connection with the business of the Texas Qil Co.

His Excellency the Governor had already refused to grant permission to Mr. Schluter to accept the Texas Oil Agency as all the circumstances known about him tended to confirm the

suspicion that he would be merely acting on behalf of Messrs. Heuber, Brockelmann and Co., and His Excellency has reason to

believe that Mr. Cheetham has now been put forward as a mere figure -head; that it was intended that the agency should really be con-

-ducted under Mr. Schluter's direction, and that Mr. Cheetham also

would be acting for Messrs. Kauter Brockelmann & Co.

His Excellency the Governor is prepared to

har Mr. Cheetham in his defence on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. at

this office.
